Приєднався 5 сер 2018
Welcome to 10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast (10MARC). We will be exploring Commodore Amiga computers from the past and how they can be used today. One of the goals of my videos is to have them available for retro Amiga computers. Of course, not too many Amiga's can access UA-cam so I will provide links to MPEG1 videos converted to 160 x 120 pixels. I also will have special HAM versions of my videos available for playback on even old 68000 based Amigas. They are pretty big, though, so you will still need a way to move them there!
Goal number two is to do as much of the work for the video and audio on actual Amigas. In future episodes I will cover how I am using the Amiga to generate content. Enjoy, and feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
You can find me on the web at www.10marc.com or twitter @10marc1 - I also spend a fair amount of time on the Commodore Amiga and Commodore 64/128 Facebook groups where you will find me as Douglas Compton.

Adding four IDE Channels and a CD-ROM to my Amiga 4000
Much as I agree with you on a lot of your points, Doug, there's just one itsy-bitsy teeny-tiny ever-so-important detail: That Just Makes Sense (TM). Especially in these days, companies aren't really for doing what makes the most sense and can generate that long-term revenue. It's all about maximizing what can be earned NOW. Unrelated, what do you suggest for additional upgrades to a 1200 running a Blizzard 1230-IV accelerator (no BSCSI2 addon)? I know I at least need to get a 32GB CF to replace the 4GB I have for now, but am not sure what else I'd need. Especially since I want to display AGA/ECS-compatible images as a background.
Hi bud, putting my Pi SD in my PC just makes my Pc hang on disk management, I have tried using a Linux reader and still the PC won't read the SD card, how did you do it?
Does the GARY adapter come with the RAMesses? If not, i have a spare one from a 2MB Trapdoor expansion. Could i use the one i have or do i need a special one for the RAMesses?
I received an AC 500+ yesterday, but it can't pass 14 MHz. I am very saddened
This is one thing we been meaning to get to create some music. Thanks for making this vid!
Never had CDTV, would be cool to own. Cool video!
Hi Doug :) Thank you for this Video :) I have an Amiga 1200, but no CF Card Pcmcia Reader for it :( Where can i find your .adf Files ? Thank you Sir :)
love this game 👍🏻 did you get a feedback on the custom dual joystick for Amiga?
I came through this video and found it very interesting! HAM mode is pretty cool, especially on OCS and ECS Amigas using 4096 colors. I can see that as for photos, HAM is very beautiful for that purpose. ImageFX looks amazing to use. Although, I use GIMP through AmiCygnix. Works the same way as ImageFX, except GIMP doesn't offer HAM modes, AFAIK. Thanks for sharing this video, my friend. Keep up the excellent work 🥰 ❤️ 🙏
Great video! You have many cool retro stuffs in your home. Keep it up my friend 🥰 ❤️ 🙏
Love how the languages options say America not English.
Now it should be changed to 'Murican and have an eagle and a flag on it
Fomo got me just ordered!!! So let me get this straight. i won't need to upgrade my chip to 3.1. Im on a a500 ntsc rev6?
No, my a500 Rev 5 has a 1.3 Kickstart, but I can soft kick any version of Kickstart that I own. It's fairly easy to flash a new Kickstart ROM to the card, and it can hold several different ones.
Thank you Doug I have a 68030 board taken from my A4000 which is now running a 68040. I want to put that card into my A3000. Cheers
I hope your SCSI works ok. With a 68030 it very well may work just fine
An Amiga guy who actually appreciates its true Atari heritage? WHAT?!?😮
Scary, huh! A lot of us Amiga guys have great respect for our Atari 8 bit heritage. Jay Miner and crew were true visionaries.
Hi! can someone please point me a tutorial to do this with only Genesis and OS3.2 ? Everything goes wrong here because I dont have the Netinterfaces folder.. So I am stuck... Many thanks!
I do get that for sure - but the general configuration is the same. With Genesis you generally have to tell it which device to use (wifipi.device), and since Genesis does not always work very well with DHCP, you sometimes have to set up your address statically. I probably should do a video on the setup of the various TCP/IP stacks one day. Roadshow is far and away the best, especially since it is still available and supported, and the only one that can reliably use DHCP
Informative! Shared.
Much obliged!
I had never played Bagman, but I did try Bagman for the Amiga and I love it. Really usually don't get TOOOO much in to the old arcades, but Bagman is great. Oh... Moon Patrol too.
I'll def be downloading this for my CD32. It will actually be a good test of the CDROM... I haven't tested it yet and I've had the CD32 for awhile.
I was surprised how much I like Bagman. I think maybe I played it back in the day, but I can't remember. It is quite a fun game!
I don't appreciate you having the picture of my house as your wallpaper Doug!
Ha! You live in Milou China now, eh?
@@10MARC Well it's my winter home.
Wifi working on the pistorm. This is 'uge.
It really works well, too. Nice and fast!
@@10MARC As soon as the board for my 1200 gets repaired I'll have to try it out. It has developed a blue tint issue, so I need to send it out for fixing.
Great video as always Doug. I did see a CDTV specific version of the TF536 on Amibay awhile back. I don't have a CDTV, so did not look in to it too much. Maybe it was designed a bit different to fit the CDTV better.
Someone messages me about that on Facebook! It looks pretty useful - the IDE is positioned sideways instead of vertical.
press the ESC button on the cdtv remote control and see what happens
I will have to try that out
More CDTV ❤
I have a bunch of fun with mine. More videos to come!
21:55 Looks like you just need a hood scoop, Doug!
That would look pretty sweet!
Four hundred and eighty pixels
I counted every last one of them!
The CDTV does have two awesome examples of what might have been. Defender of the Crown CDTV with its spoken narrative and Xenon II megablast with Colin the shopkeeper and the soundtrack are excellent examples of ‘multimedia’. If just they could have added more gameplay into DOFTC and improved the hitbox detection in Xenon II. Perhaps this could be retrospectively improved?
Good examples for sure. I just love the Xenon II soundtrack! There were a couple titles that were "Almost there" - but I suppose companies were dealing with new technologies and limited budgets
Future Doug has got a sort of star trek '60s vibe, i imagine people in the sixties all thought in the future we would wear shiny things like that 😂
Maybe we will see "Future Doug" again. I was glad to see I don't age too badly in the distant future.
CDTV was another lost opportunity for C=. Might have been good. Thanks for the vid.
The price shocked a lot of us back in the early 90's... But if you look back just buying a CD-ROM for a PC could set you back $500. It was all so new then too - software publishers just did not know how to take advantage of that space and power. Not sure if they do even today!
Commodore CDTV. Bucket list updated. That S-Video was seriously nice.
Nice! Enjoy your CDTV!
Looks like a cool upgrade, but I really like having the lid on my CDTV and the dust bunnies on the floor where they belong. ;)
Oh for sure! I have to figure a way to keep the TF 536 low enough to close the lid. My CDTV is part of my entertainment center and needs to look pretty!
Sordan has "Amiga 500 68000 Straight CPU Processor Riser Relocator Adapter" I'd drop some links but UA-cam seems to hate them. :(
Hey Doug, I'd love to see some games and software running on the CDTV that take advantage of the 030, have you tried games like Citadel (ReMonstered), Nemac IV, even ADoom running in Extra HalfBright mode would be interesting to see.
I will have to try some out!
What tv are you using Doug?
That is a Sony Bravia from about 2007. It is quite nice!
Why bother with the 8mb once you have the TF? Just curious. Also “future doug” has the best clothes I’ve ever seen!!!!
The 8MB will just slow down your system. So it's pointless.
Just because I suppose. Not sure what else I would do with it. And 72 MB of FAST RAM is way cooler than 64 MB! The Tinfoil shirt was OK on Future Doug, but his pants were straight from a Raider from Fallout.
Maybe... But with how Amiga prioritizes RAM it should not make much difference.
@@10MARC You want the RAM board in for the SCSI controller. The SCSI controller can't see the 32-bit RAM so it will DMA into slow chip ram without the 24-bit fast RAM installed.
Two possibilities on the RAM expansion issue: 1. You had a bad connection (it happens) 2. The new ROMs and/or Workbench needed to configure for the upgrade card "on installation" and thus didn't agree with having it installed already. Number 2 is one that a lot of auto-detect systems suffer, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. p.s. might be fun to upgrade that video RAM to 2MB if you can find a way. Also, seeing if you can wire in RGB output and program in the appropiate scanlines and output gamma for ATSC video. As a note, you can create a lateral extender for the IDE header that will offset it horizontally and lower it.
I am leaning a bit towards the underused expansion port just passing signals from the 68000 socket, and when a 68030 is introduced maybe the wrong data is passed. It continues to work great when I just have the 68000 installed.
Thank you Doug excellent learning Video. Cheers
Happy to do it! I have been meaning to do this upgrade for about 8 months now.
Would really love a CDTV-CR. If only they released it instead of the original. It would've been a LOT more successful.
Very true. I can't imaagine more than a few prototypes were ever made. I still like my CDTV, though.
I built a similar sampler from a project in CU-Amiga magazine. Worked really well but looked like it might explode at any moment - dodgy soldering and wires everywhere, stuffed into an old RF modulator box. Wish I'd kept it!
That sounds cool! I have heard that audio digitizers are pretty simple. Of course if I tried to build one from scratch I would burn my house down
Hey if you want a CD+G disk try Fleetwood Mac Behind the Mask. It has graphics with every song and lyrics you can sing along to.! 😃
Love me some Fleetwood Mac, and it has nothing to do with having a huge crush on Stevie Nicks since I was 12 years old. I will have to look for that one. Thanks for the info.
Absolutely a very interesting review of the well known Amiga sampler. Watched the whole video. On my X5000, I use my BOYA mic connected to my phone, record with Voice Recorder, edit the samples in Audacity on PC stored on USB pen, then bring them for a final touch in OctaMED SoundStudio on the Amiga. Keep up the excellent work 🥰 ❤️ 🙏
You should try the Aegis Audiomaster and see if it works on your hardware.
@@10MARC That would be a great idea. I could certainly give it a try. Thanks, Douglas 🥰
Very interesting, as I am into some sampling! I will look through the whole video. Thanks for sharing 🥰 ❤️ 🙏
Great memories. I worked in a TV station during the early 90s and we used Amiga 2000 with genlock and ScalaMM for titleling in all our programs
I really wish there were some good videos online for learning Scala. Guess I have to make one!
Maybe the reason that works only with "real" rca outputs is because it wants a "line level" output (usualy 2.0Vrms). Headphone outputs have much higher power, because they are designed to drive headphones. You can try an adapter from a real cd player to a male 3.5 mm jack, and then with a female 3.5 mm back to the rca of the amiga. It should work fine. Anyway, great video as always! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I think that is exactly what the issue is. My other audio digitizer handles headphone output just fine, so I was surprised this one did not
Good video. wonderful. I like it!!. Saludos desde argentina.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Thank you Doug a great tutorial on sound capture.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow. I remember, earlier on, an audio digitizer that some university student designed. It was published somewhere, probably in an alternate Amiga publication. (You know that there were those, like Amiga Scientific). Anyway, I even corresponded with the designer. I gathered all the components, including case, etched my own circuit board, and then for some reason never got around to building the audio digitizer! Yes, I'm an idiot, but I was a busy guy.
I remember hearing about the "build your own" audio digitizers. Looking at mine, they do appear to be pretty simple and straightforward devices. I should see if I can find an old article on a DYI unit.
Arrrggghhhhh stop with the demon voice I'm drinking good beer (Dragon's Milk) ! 😀 I have a DSS8+ love that thing. Even now surprises people as to what I can do with on 30+ year old hardware. Did a thing about a year ago where I recorded some speech and said I would modify it. 15-20 mins later I did the usual cut the voice up and changed pitch ect and played that impressed but not that impressed. But as they walked away I played a quick DnB track I created (most of the time was spent doing that) using their voice totally, stopped them in their tracks mind blown (the track sucked BTW I'm no musician) I really need to get Imagine out and do an animation with a dinosaur singing to a track, I lost all my work years ago. lol
Yes, the DSS8+ was an American favorite. I occasionally send voice samples of "The Evil Gnome" To my pals at "Pixel Garden Podcast". It's a hoot!
@@10MARC Back then (I still lived in the UK) I would say it was the Microdeal Megalosound that I saw the most, followed by the Technosound then the DSS. If memory is correct the DSS was a bit pricey. I have both a Meglosound and the DSS, with the DSS being a far better sampler. But the Meglosound does have it's uses with it's obviously more retro grungy sound (comparative to now, back then it was just all kinds of fantastic) which is why I still have it. My friend had the Technosound first and it was awesome.
I had Technosound Turbo, with a much improved version of the software, and used Audiomaster IV to edit them. I still use that combination today when editing samples for my games.
That is awesome that you are still using it! I love Audiomaster. I should spend more time with IV, but so far 3 has been really slick
@@10MARC - btw, I used your video about HamView to make 2 games so far, Jari-Matti Rally and Trans-pennine express on itch. Next one is Crysis. Can the Amiga play Crysis??
@@lifeschool oh nice! I need to check those out!!!!
It seems that the '.info' files work similar to how .PIF files worked on Windows 3.x. PIF stands for "Program Information File."
Yep. Except .info files are approximately 3728% cooler than .pif files.
My guess is that you have an impedance problem: 3,5mm connectors typically are used for headphones, there you have an impedance of around 32..200Ohm while a line input has around 60kOhm. So the output impedance of a line output is quite high (around 1..4kOhm) but needs to be low to drive a headphone. The specs e. g. in my cassette deck manual are quite incomplete but for headphones I found for example 3,3mW output power for a 32Ohm load. That leads to an output level of about 0,3V while line output is documented with 0,5V. So while the voltages do not differ too much my educated guess is that the digitizer interacts with the output impedance of the source and needs a certain impedance. You may want to try to put a resistor of 1..4kOhm between the output of the source and the input of the digitizer. I would be interested in the result...
Since the problem seems to be solved by running it thru a mixer, I am just going to test the same sources running thru my halfway decent mixer and my cheap and cheerful $35 tiny mixer. I will probably do a follow up show
@TLang-el6sk He needs to lowering volume on phone. Every consumer audio equipment dont have hi input voltage. It is usaly somewhere between 150-350 mV (RMS). Standard for consumer audio equpment LINE IN is 0.447V or -10dBV max. Mobile phones have headphne output reference level at 0dBV or 1V on max volume or higher. Lovering volume somewhere between 30-40% of max volume level at mobile phone can be ideal to achieve -10 output level for line input at digitizer.
I still have my MegaLoSound sampler! I usually sampled directly from within OctaMED, which worked great.
Oh that's cool! I am looking forward to the brand new Octamed being released in a few weeks.
I loved this one Doug. I'm interested in the answers to the noise question. I have my original Technosound Turbo and recently gave it a run out. I was disappointed with the quality of the samples I made using the bundled Technosound software, but got great recordings when using the sampler within ProTracker. MAYBE I happened to switch adaptors and it wasn't the software after all, I can't tell now. but I may go back and experiment again. PS I made music using stuff from my kitchen: ua-cam.com/video/qrVn3vv4cTE/v-deo.html
I honestly get better samples using other software. Maybe I am missing something in the Techno sound software... Take a look at the comments on the video. There are a lot of good tips and explanations for the issues I had.
@@10MARC you're right. I noticed one comment about turning the filter setting *off* in Technosound for better quality. Maybe that was it. I definitely want to play with my TST some more now.
